Linux Uses by non-techies

Posted by nycjeff 247 days ago
It could be a feature or something that shows how linux can be used by people who aren't formally in the computer fields.
i.e. how is this elementary school teacher using linux?
How is this screenwriter using linux?

I think a few other ideas hint towards this, but you sum it up nicely. The Linux image needs to get out of the geek user spaces it's been plunked in and thrown into the average person audience.

I think the largest user space is non IT. To my way of thinking that is probably one of the best groups to target if one actually wants to have significant Linux adoption. It is also the easiest to satisfy in terms of performance because their basic computer needs are mostly satisfied by an appliance. Word processing, browsing, communication, movies, and music. A simple system which is stable could be put in the average school, home, or small business, and they wouldn't know, or care, if it was Linux or not. :) They are not very interested in computers. Other operating system salesmen have seen that as an advantage but Linux geeks have been a bit dense in that regard. /ducks

When music recording is less painful on Linux (OSS/ALSA/Jack/Others...AHHH!), I would be happy to write an article about my experiences in a Jazz Band using Linux.. if that would be helpful?

I think that would be a great article!

This does seem to be one vital thing that all Linux communities are missing. When the majority of general Windows users are in communities talking about community things it's rarely about the OS they happen to be using – Windows went with the "I'ma pc" ads for this reason. People are too busy scuba-diving and writing rap songs on Windows to talk about its infrastructure. :)

If Linux is really to go mainstream we need to think mainstream while reducing the overwhelming geek-speak. I know, this is scary territory for the existing Linux communities... but it needs to happen.

It might help to point out that in many cases, Linux already IS mainstream in millions of embedded devices and cell phones, not to mention in backend servers like Google that people use every day. Dirk Hohndel pointed out in a recent conference that it would be very difficult to avoid Linux for any length of time in the modern world. Just because it isn't ubiquitous on the desktop doesn't mean it isn't ubiquitous.

large number of non-techi people want to use linux. they require some working knowledge of office programm. many students and non-office goers want to use linux for internet. if the progams are tailored as per the need (in some cases they do exit) many people will start using linux as an alternetive os

Totally supportive but can you explain your idea a little further?

Pretty good idea. A lot of non-techie people use Linux, but no one really mentions it.

It should also be pointed out that everyone does use Linux - maybe showing devices that use Linux that no one really knew about (ATM's, cell phones, TiVo, firewalls, etc.), showing that everyone uses Linux, but not on the device most people use more than any other - their computer.
