Coolest Desktop of the Day

Host a daily competition to award a "Coolest Desktop of the Day" (can be weekly, monthly, whatever). Windows users who visit Linux.com will be able to see for themselves how amazing Linux can really look, that it's not just a difficult command line interface, and eventually drive the FUD out of their minds.

IMO this is a really decent idea.

Linux is certainly a competitor to windows these days, but most people have not seen why. In addition to many other reasons, Linux can look as good or better than vista, or even macosx because of the ability to customise every aspect of the gui.

To take it a step further? Have regular roundups of monthly, quarterly, and yearly winners as well as runner-ups. It might be good to use a simple star rating or up/down digg style vote. Based on the metrics of those results the web interface could automatically show the top 10, sort by's etc..

Coolest desktop of the week would be best, I think. And do what "Allenwjones" said too, but with yearly prices.

Can the winner of the contest also tell us how she made her desktop that way? Am sure many people are unaware about Beryl or Compizfusion or Screenlets. Naming the technologies and probably showing how to go about in making your desktop look really attractive will add to this already great idea :D

I like this idea also. I'm a fan of cool desktops. I change mine about every other day. I started the "Show Us Your Linux Desktop" thread over at the Linux.com forums. It's the most popular thread there right now.

Love this idea.

On the other hand, it should be required that the winner explain what special programs (if any) they used, and write a detailed walk-through to teach people how to set it up - preferably without using the command line (command lines scare most Windows users to death - it even used to scare me!)

Though this walk-through shouldn't be too long. It should be easy to set up quickly.
